My Thoughts:
Unbreak My Heart is probably the most REAL and HONEST book that I've read in a long time. I've been stuck in a paranormal and edgy contemporary rut lately, and while I still love those books, I needed a break. Unbreak My Heart was like going home for me. I'm going to admit right now that I did not read the synopsis before jumping in. I accepted the book based on the cover alone, which was risky... but in the end, I'm so glad that I didn't read the synopsis because the surprises I was in store for only added to the heat-breaking highs and lows of the story.
On the very first page, we are introduced to Shane. A loving husband and father, completely enamored with his wife. His wife, Rachel, trying to convince him that going to see her best friend Kate (who has a connection to him through childhood) perform IS the best way to spend one of their few nights out without children. Right away, it's a struggle I can identify with. The entire story continues that way. The ups and downs of life, the real and honest struggles of surviving life's curve balls and finding happiness even when times seem their darkest. I loved Rachel. There were times that I absolutely hated Shane, all while my heart was breaking for him. And there were times that I wanted to slap Kate and tell her to wake up! I'm not going to address more about the characters and plot than those little teasers because you can read the synopsis below if you want, or you can go into it cold like I did. (*whispers* Go cold! You won't regret it!)
The family dynamic to this is story is really what hooked me. I laughed with them, I cried with them. From the very first page, I didn't want to step away. I read it in two days, and if I had been able to sit at home all day, I likely would have finished it in only one. I didn't know that it was the first in the series while I was reading it. But it is!!!! And I've already got the second book in the series on my wish list! At the end of the day, Unbreak My Heart definitely gets 5 "birdies" from me!
Synopsis from Goodreads:
What do you do when your soul mate marries your best friend?
If you're Kate Evans, you keep your friend Rachel, bond with her kids, and bury your feelings for her husband. The fact that Shane's in the military and away for long periods helps-but when tragedy strikes, everything changes.
After Rachel, pregnant with her fourth child, dies in a car accident and the baby miraculously survives, Kate upends her entire life to share parenting duties. Then on the first anniversary of Rachel's death, Kate and Shane take comfort in each other in a night that they both soon regret.
Shane's been angry for a year, and now he feels guilty too - for sleeping with his wife's best friend and liking it . . . liking her. Kate's ability to read him like a book may have once sent Shane running, but their lives are forever entwined and they are growing closer.
Now with Shane deployed for seven months, Kate is on her own and struggling with being a single parent. Shane is loving and supportive from thousands of miles away, but his homecoming brings a betrayal Kate never saw coming. So Kate's only choice is to fight for the future she deserves - with or without Shane. . .
Ohh great review! sorry I had to read the synopsis too see if I like the book or not, but this one really looks and sounds absolutely amazing and a real tear jerker of a book. I have a feeling if I ever check out this book that I will most definitely ugly cry. Thank you for your awesome post.
