My thoughts:

I received this book for an honest review. It's been awhile since I have read a Western romance, yet despite that I liked this book.

Roman Granger returns home when he feels that his teenage son is following in his bad boys ways.  Roman is also hoping that he can reconnect with his son as he has been gone more often than not because of his business. Add to his problems, Mila Banchini. There's always been an attraction there, but he's refused to act on it because she's his sister's best friend and a virgin. Too sweet for someone like him.

What follows is funny (the hospital scene with Roman and his mother coming up with code words for time to change the subject), romance, heartbreak, redemption, and forgiveness. Note that there is a suicide attempt, but the author handles it, along with the healing, with grace and intelligence.

I highly recommend this book and give it 4 1/2 little birdies for an awesome read.

Blurb:

Every town needs a bad boy, and Wrangler's Creek's has been gone far too long…
Getting his high school girlfriend pregnant was just one square in Roman Granger's checkered past, but it changed him forever. When his son's mother skipped town after the birth, Roman decided to do the same, baby Tate in tow, hoping for a fresh start.
Now Roman fears his teenage son is following in his wayward footsteps, so he returns home to Wrangler's Creek, aiming to set him straight. It's there he encounters Tate's cousin Mila Banchini, the good-girl opposite of Roman who's had a crush on him since childhood. The old spark between them undeniably never died, though Roman worries it'll only lead to heartache. But if falling for Mila is such a bad idea, why does everything about holding her feel so right?

Page Count: 384 pages

My thoughts:

I received this book for an honest review.

Elijah Prescott is a Navy SEAL who is recovering from an injury he suffered on his last mission. Despite being physically cleared to resume his duties, he feels that maybe he's not mentally ready and takes some time off to sort his life out. He heads back home to stay with his cousin, who owns a gym, and runs into his ex-wife.

Ava Prescott has turned her life around from what it was when she was married to Elijah. She teaches numerous classes at the gym and with the discipline she's learned to get her body in shape, she's buried the pain of her failed marriage.

Proximity, as well as the rekindling of their physical relationship, makes Elijah and Ava do some soul searching in regards to their marriage, one of them being that Ava never really accepted his chosen career. When she's pulled into an ongoing mission with Elijah's team to ferret out a traitor, she finally learns to accept him for who he is.

Call to Engage will pull the emotions out of you while keeping you turning the pages. There's action, intrigue, love, humor, and heartbreak. If you like your heroes to be strong Alphas and their women strong enough to handle them, you're going to definitely want to read this book.

I give Call to Engage 5 little birdies for a superior read. Tawny Weber is an author who knows her stuff when it comes to military books and it shows.

Blurb:

The Poseidon team are hard-bodied, fiercely competitive Navy SEALs. But when a sensitive mission goes disastrously wrong, three of the team's finest will have to trust their hearts and instincts to uncover the truth…
Lieutenant Elijah Prescott should be spending his precious leave somewhere with sun, surf and scantily clad women. Instead, he's heading home with two goals in mind. Figure out exactly how his last assignment went to hell and almost killed him—and reconnect with the woman who might offer salvation.
Ava Monroe has streamlined her life, eliminating every source of pain—including a marriage touched by tragedy. One glimpse of her ex and those good intentions turn to bad-girl desires. Her strategy: get over Elijah by getting under him again, sating herself until she can finally let go. But as betrayal within the rank of the SEALs turns deadly, there's no denying that her heart and her life are on the line. Elijah is the only man who can protect both…

My Thoughts:

I received this book for an honest review. By the title alone, I figured that this book was going to be full of one hot, steamy sex scene after another once the heroine lost her virginity. While it does have some sex scenes, there was nothing too graphic if that bothers you.

What I liked about this book was the story. The authors tell it from both sides. Jane is a small town girl who goes to New York hoping to put her college education to use in the advertising field. She grew up in foster care and while she might be innocent, she's not naive to the ways of the world.

Anthony is a rich playboy who barely goes through the motions at Daddy's ad agency. His constant partying and having everything splashed across the tabloids has made dear old dad give him an ultimatum. What transpires is two people coming together with their baggage, working through it and coming out on the other side all the better for their problems.

This book has a HEA, but not so sickening sweet you're gagging.  I will definitely look for future books from these two.

I would have liked to seen a couple of characters fleshed out more, but maybe they are saving that for another book. For that alone, I give this book 4 1/2 little larks.

Blurb:

A hot shot billionaire playboy can be quite intimidating, especially for a plain Jane virgin like me. When the elevator doors open to my new boss glaring down at my disastrous coffee mishap on my first day at James Enterprises, the look of disgust on his handsomely chiseled face is menacing, knocking any hope for leaving him impressed right out the window. Or so I thought… Later that night when I’m coerced by my newfound office friend to have a few drinks at the local jazz club, I catch Anthony James’ attention from across the room and sparks fly. I try to resist the temptation—why would he possibly be attracted to a simple girl like me—but Anthony James always gets what he wants… is he deserving enough of my virginity?

Book Review: Rarity from the Hollow

Rarity from the Hollow
Published By: Dog Horn
Publication Date: December 2016
ebook - 284 pages
Source: Provided by Author
Science Fiction

Eleven year-old Lacy Dawn lives in rural West Virginia with her abusive, PTSD-suffering father and her under-educated, defeated mother. After the sexual abuse and murder of her best friend, Lacy continues to play with her friend’s ghost. Lacy finds refuge in her friendship with DotCom, the robot who has been sent to cultivate a relationship with her and convince her to embark on a quest to save the universe.

Reading back over what I just wrote, I have to say that Rarity from the Hollow is even stranger than it sounds. Part of that strangeness is in the way the book is written. Eggleton divided the story into three nearly discrete sections which don’t seem to rely on each other very much. In the tragic first third of the book, the reader learns of the conditions in which Lacy Dawn is living. (This is the part with the physical and sexual abuse.) The second part of Rarity from the Hollow is where the reader meets DotCom, Lacy’s robot friend, and he helps “fix” her parents. Finally, Lacy accepts the quest to save the universe from destruction. The three act structure is pretty typical, but in Rarity from the Hollow they almost feel like separate stories. Lacy carries almost no baggage from the events of the first part of the book, and her parents, once cured, still don’t really act like parents. I felt little continuity through the story except for a persistent feeling of surreality.

Blog Tour: Hottest Mess by J. Kenner

  hottest mess available now
The S.I.N. series continues with the seductive follow-up to the Stark International Novel Dirtiest Secret, from the New York Times bestselling author of “red-hot and angsty” fiction that “keeps readers guessing” (Publishers Weekly, on Under My Skin).

No one can know about our love—and hiding only makes it hotter. Dallas Sykes has a reputation. He is known for his parties, his money, and the countless women on his arm. Yet the Dallas I know is a different man—darker, smarter, and unbearably sexy. Just one look from him can leave me breathless; the anticipation of his touch can make me lose control. Inextricably bound by our past, we keep each other’s secrets. And while there are people who have the power to hurt us, it’s the truth that threatens us most of all. Dallas can be mine only behind closed doors, our passion as searing as it is forbidden. Yet nothing in this world has ever felt so desperately, deliciously right. Hottest Mess is intended for mature audiences.

From the New York Times bestselling author of such “racy, sizzling Stark novels” (RT Book Reviews) as Release Me and Say My Name comes the provocative first Stark International Novel—the beginning of the S.I.N. series.

dscoverIt was wrong for us to be together, but it was even harder to be apart. The memory of Dallas Sykes burns inside of me. Everyone knows him as a notorious playboy, a man for whom women and money are no object. But to me, he’s still the one man I desperately crave—yet the one I can never have. Dallas knows me better than anyone else. We bear the same scars, the same darkness in our past. I thought I could move on by staying away, but now that we’re drawn together once more, I can’t fight the force of our attraction or the temptation to make him mine. We’ve tried to maintain control, not letting ourselves give in to desire. And for so long we’ve told ourselves no—but now it’s finally time to say yes. Dirtiest Secret is intended for mature audiences.

Exclusive Excerpt:
LURED BY THE pulse of sex and anonymity, Amanda Jenner moved through the dusky bar, brushing against silk, satin, cotton, and flesh, each graze feeding the adrenaline coursing through her veins. Blue lights misted over sweaty strangers lost in the seductive bump and grind of foreplay and hoping for a night of erotic pleasure. If Amanda tried hard enough, she could smell tomorrow’s scent du jour—regret. Tonight she had no room for the confidence-crushing worry of what tomorrow would bring. She scanned the crowd, as she had in the previous three bars, immediately dismissing anyone who wasn’t in costume. Her world was full of boring men who excelled at wining, dining, and boring her to sleep. Ten years of romance novels and movies had led her astray, looking for the elusive needle in a haystack. She’d led herself astray, always the careful thinker, careful dresser. Or as her younger sister, Ally, would say, Careful kisser, careful lover. Ally, however, had taken charge of her sex life—and she’d found the perfect man. Now it’s my turn.

Guest Post & Excerpt: Playing the Perfect Boyfriend by Julie Particka

Guest Post from Julie Particka:

The Music of My Soul

Inspiration comes from a lot of places, and as I’ve mentioned pretty much whenever I’m asked, the main inspiration for Playing the Perfect Boyfriend came from conversations with my single friends about the never-ending deluge of well-meaning questions. When are you going to find a nice guy and settle down? When are you going to have kids? They all kind of translate to “When are you going to have the kind of happily ever after I think you should have?”

Newsflash: people hate that.

But while that was the core of the idea—a different kind of happily ever after—it wasn’t enough. And so I started paying attention to which of my friends were the ones who complain about that. Then I took a long, hard look at post-divorce me and realized we had a lot in common.

This particular epiphany happened while I was sitting in my minivan in the Jr. High parking lot, waiting for my kid to get out of school.

It also happened while I was blasting Halestorm.

I discovered the band Halestorm a couple years ago and promptly bought all their CDs I could get my hands on. Listening to their music makes me feel like somehow Lzzy Hale has a direct line into my soul. So that was also the moment I knew I had to work the band into Jade’s book.

It’s not a huge thing in the actual text. I mention a couple song titles (one tongue-in-cheek and the other as a pivotal moment) but the inclusion was less about individual songs for me as it was the attitude that Lzzy brings to her music. It’s raw. It’s revealing. It is unapologetically real.

And that was something I desperately wanted Jade to be. I didn’t want her to be a picture perfect heroine. I wanted her to have faults and failings—major ones—and not to apologize for a single one of them. I knew going in that it would make her a polarizing figure. People were either going to love her or hate her.

And that is okay by me, because it means she’s real in the way that only certain people manage to be. She’s not the girl who everyone thinks is “nice” or who “everyone gets along with.” She’s fiercely loyal, viciously protective, and passionately loving. She’s the kind of person I would happily call friend…and on occasion “bitch.” But that’s okay because she’d call me one right back, and then we’d laugh about it—as best bitches do.

If you’re curious about the band that speaks to my soul (and Jade’s), though, here is a smattering of the Halestorm titles I had on repeat while writing Playing the Perfect Boyfriend (in no particular order—Okay, fine. It’s most-played on my iTunes…):

“You Call Me a Bitch Like It’s a Bad Thing”
“Love Bites (So Do I)”
“Nothing to Do with Love”
“I’m Not an Angel”
“Love/Hate Heartbreak”
“What Were You Expecting?”
“Beautiful with You”
“Break In”
“Freak Like Me”
“In Your Room”
“Sick Individual”
“Amen”
“Mayhem”

“Bad Girl’s World”
